Prelude’s Prices Might Shock Even GR Supra Owners In Japan

  • Leaked Japanese pricing suggests Prelude will be one of Honda’s most expensive cars.
  • Prelude reportedly costs more than Civic Type R, Nissan Z, and even the GR Supra in Japan.
  • The single available trim of the hybrid coupe will reportedly cost ¥6,179,800 ($41,000).

After years of rumors, the Honda Prelude is finally making a comeback in September 2025, and naturally, one of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is how much this hybrid coupe is going to cost. While Honda hasn’t confirmed pricing yet, leaked reports from Japan may offer some clues, and you might want to brace yourself.

If the numbers hold true, the Prelude could end up being, if not the most expensive, then certainly one of the priciest models in Honda’s domestic lineup.

Designed as a sportier and more premium two-door counterpart to the Civic, the Prelude shares the same basic platform but positions itself as a step up in both style and performance. According to Japanese outlet Creative Trend citing leaked information, the pricing reflects that positioning, placing it well above the Civic Type R in the domestic market.

Part of what makes this leak worth noting is how detailed it is, as it includes not only base pricing, but also optional extras and trim specifics.

A High-Performance Price Tag

More specifically, the the Prelude is said to launch in a single trim level priced at ¥6,179,800 (about $41,000). Let that sink in for a moment, take a breath, and read on. A more exclusive Honda ON Limited Edition, featuring a black roof and several dealer-installed extras, will be listed at ¥6,540,000 ($43,400).

Buyers can choose Flame Red or Crystal Black Pearl at no extra cost, while Meteoroid Gray Metallic adds ¥38,500 ($256), and the Moonlit Pearl finish comes with a premium of ¥85,000 ($565).

For comparison, the Civic e:HEV that’s built locally with a similar hybrid setup is priced between ¥4,094,200-4,403,300 ($27,200-29,200) in Japan. The high-performance Civic Type R is slightly more expensive at ¥4,997,300 to ¥5,998,300 ($33,200 to $39,900). Even the larger, U.S.-built Accord e:HEV sedan comes in lower, ranging from ¥5,599,000 to ¥5,999,400 ($37,200 to $39,800).

More Expensive Than the Fairlady Z or GR Supra?

While the Honda Prelude doesn’t have a direct rival, its rumored pricing does raise some eyebrows when compared to other Japanese sports coupes. Surprisingly, the hybrid is said to cost more than the locally-made Nissan Fairlady Z, which starts at ¥5,497,800 ($36,500) and comes with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6.

In fact, it also edges out the Toyota GR Supra, built in Austria at the same Magna Steyr facility as the BMW Z4, which starts at ¥4,995,000 ($33,200) with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. If that pricing holds, it’s fair to say more than a few people will be asking what the heck Honda was thinking.

Debut Timeline and Key Features

The official debut of the Prelude will take place on September 4, and Honda will start accepting orders in Japan from September 5. According to the leaked documents, the first production run will be limited to 2,000 units. Whether those disappear in a flash or end up lingering on dealer lots will be a pretty good litmus test for how well Honda has read the room.

The Prelude will be powered by an upgraded version of the Honda e:HEV self-charging hybrid system, combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. Furthermore, it will carry chassis components from the Civic Type R , including wider tracks, Brembo front brakes, and a dual-axis front suspension system, though all have been tuned specifically for the Prelude.

Standard equipment is expected to be generous, even in the base trim. Highlights include black 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive dampers, the Honda S+ shift system, metal paddle shifters, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch infotainment display with Google built-in.

Other amenities include ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats upholstered in leather and suede. Interestingly, the seats are designed differently for the driver and passenger, focusing on support and comfort respectively.

How Much Will in Cost the USA?

Since the reportedly leaked figures are for Japan, it’s hard to pin down exactly what the Prelude will cost in the States. Still, if the Japanese pricing is any indication, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the hybrid coupe crest the $40,000 mark here, making it at least $10,000 more than the mechanically related Civic hybrid.

However, final pricing will also depend on where the Prelude is manufactured and how Honda chooses to position it in global markets. The Japan-built Civic Type R, for example, costs $12,700 more in the U.S. than in Japan.

On the other hand, the U.S.-built Accord is about $3,500 cheaper for American buyers than for Japanese ones. Meanwhile, the Civic, currently made in Japan but soon moving to Honda’s Indiana plant, carries a $3,000 markup in the U.S. market.

We’ve reached out to local Honda representatives for comment and will update this story if they respond.
