Dodge’s Forgotten Gullwing Charger Is Finally Coming Out Of Hiding

  • The Dodge Turbo Charger concept is going up for auction on September 21.
  • The car features an aerodynamically optimized design and a turbocharged engine.
  • The model served as an Indy World Series pace car and was shown at auto shows.

A number of high-profile auctions will occur this month as part of Monterey Car Week, but nearly 300 vehicles from the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum in Chicago will go under the hammer in September. Since the museum is permanently closing, everything must go and is being offered without reserve.

The collection is pretty eclectic and includes everything from a horse-drawn hearse to a 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8. They’re joined by a 1959 Goggomobil Dart Roadster and a number of cars from American Bantam.

While there’s something for everyone, one of the more interesting cars is this Dodge Turbo Charger concept. Looking far sleeker than the production model, this aerodynamically optimized coupe features a unique front end with a pointier nose and covered headlights.

Moving further back, we can see gullwing doors, NACA ducts, and covered rear wheels. They’re joined by a streamlined rump that features a sizable wing as well as a wide diffuser.

The upgrades continue in the cabin as the concept has been equipped with 11 different gauges. They span nearly the entire width of the dashboard and some are likely out of the driver’s view.

Given the performance theme, it’s not surprising to see a roll cage and Recaro seats. They’re joined by RJS harnesses and a five-speed manual transmission.

Speaking of the powertrain, the car is reportedly equipped with a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. It previewed the upcoming production engine, which produced 142 hp (106 kW / 144 PS) and 160 lb-ft (217 Nm) of torque. Besides the spiffy turbo, the concept was equipped with a modified suspension featuring special shocks, springs, and sway bars.

The coupe is being auctioned off by Mecum and was used as a pace car in the PPG Indy Car World Series in the early 1980’s. The model is also said to have been shown at the Detroit and Chicago Auto Shows in 1982.
