Mustang Driver Becomes Wyoming Police Poster Boy For How Not To Corner

  • A Ford Mustang rolled over exiting a turn on Beartooth Highway near Yellowstone on August 31.
  • The driver was flown to Billings for treatment and released the same night with no serious injuries.
  • Wyoming Highway Patrol cited the driver for careless driving and reminded motorists to slow down.

Labor Day weekend in America is often fraught with all sorts of dangers on the road. In this case, though, the driver of a Ford Mustang didn’t have to worry about other drivers or even wild animals; he took himself out of the equation with some truly horrible driving. Thankfully, he lived to tell the tale despite rolling his pony car in a remote location.

The crash happened on August 31, near mile marker 27 in Park County, Wyoming, just east of Yellowstone National Park. Video taken by a tourist shows the Mustang barreling down the road before a long sweeping left-hand hairpin turn. Near the exit, the car leaves the road surface, going far wider than the surface can accommodate and hits what appears to be a rock and tumbles through the air.

Despite the violent crash, the driver reportedly sustained no serious injuries. Wyoming Highway Patrol says they flew the driver to Billings for medical care, and he was released later the same night. Avoiding serious injury or death turned out to be the luckiest part of this guy’s day. Officers didn’t let him avoid getting a ticket for careless driving. They reminded motorists that sharp mountain roads like the Beartooth Highway demand extra caution.

“Make smart decisions on the road, folks. Scan ahead, pay attention, obey the rules of the road, and slow down,” WHP urged in its statement on social media. The incident ultimately ended up drawing action from the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Highway Patrol, Park County Fire, and a local towing service. As for what exactly caused the crash, it seems like a simple lack of driving skill.

While there is a second car in the oncoming lane when the Mustang crashes, it doesn’t appear to affect the driver’s actions. The pony car doesn’t veer hard at the last moment or seem to experience some sort of snap oversteer. Instead, it’s almost as if the front tires just didn’t have enough grip to complete the turn. It’s a lesson the driver will hopefully learn from.
