A fault with the seat belt retractor could trigger an uncontrolled spool-out of the shoulder belt

- Affected models include Volvo XC60, XC90, V60 CC, and V90 CC.
- Owners will begin receiving notifications starting in late October.
- Volvo has not confirmed any injuries linked to the seat belt defect.
Seat belts are often taken for granted today, but the modern three-point design exists because of Volvo. It became the first carmaker to introduce this lifesaving feature, which has since become a global standard and credited with protecting millions of people.
Now, in a reminder that even safety pioneers can face setbacks, Volvo is recalling more than 1,300 vehicles in the United States due to a fault with certain seat belt retractors.

The company explains that certain models are equipped with seat belt retractors containing a damaged torsion bar. Volvo says that if this bar fails during a crash, the shoulder belt may spool out uncontrollably, which could reduce its ability to restrain occupants and increase the risk of injury.
Fault Traced to Supplier
Volvo has linked the problem to one of its sub-suppliers, explaining that torsion rods could have been compromised when a component jammed during production. The automaker has emphasized that the fault lies with the supplier’s manufacturing process rather than with its own assembly.

In total, 1,355 vehicles are impacted by the recall. These include 407 examples of the 2026 XC90 produced between June 18, 2025, and July 2, 2025, as well as 914 units of the 2026 XC60 built from June 23, 2025, to July 9, 2025. Also impacted are 16 Volvo V90 CC models built from June 19, 2025, to July 10, 2025, and 18 Volvo V60 CC models manufactured from July 2, 2025, to July 4, 2025.
Volvo has not stated if it is aware of any injuries related to the seat belt issue. What we do know is that owners will be notified of the recall from October 30, and dealerships have been instructed to replace potentially impacted front seat belts on both the left and right sides.
