Genesis Is Getting An EV With More Than 1,000 HP

  • This new model could be a rival to the Porsche Taycan or perhaps the Cayenne Electric.
  • Genesis is also working on range-extender and traditional hybrid powertrains.
  • Once a luxury-only brand, Genesis is rapidly expanding its performance fleet.

Not only is Hyundai’s N division planning several new sporty models, but has confirmed it’s working on a new body-on-frame midsize pickup truck. However, it’s news that a new all-electric flagship is being developed for Genesis that has us really excited.

During Hyundai’s recent investor day, chief executive Jose Munoz displayed a slide for the Genesis brand that revealed it is working on new EV, EREV, and HEV powertrains. It noted that the automaker’s EVs will be focused on high performance, delivering “600hp+” in base guise, with the potential to “the extreme performance of 1,000hp+.”

Genesis is the Hyundai Motor Group’s high-end, luxury models, much like Lexus is for Toyota. However, Genesis is getting a sporty edge with the new Magma high-performance division, and soon, it’ll even enter endurance racing with the GMR-001 Le Mans Daytona hypercar.

The first model from the Magma division will be a special version of the Genesis GV60, expected to borrow components from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT. Expected to deliver over 600 hp, it’ll obviously be very quick. However, for as impressive as 600 hp is, it’s nothing compared to more than 1,000 hp.

Genesis GMR-001 Le Mans Daytona hypercar

Hyundai provided no indication as to what form a four-figure horsepower Genesis model could take. It could perhaps be a road-going hypercar inspired by the Le Mans racer, or perhaps an electric version of the X Gran Berlinetta Vision Gran Turismo concept from a couple of years ago.

However, given that vehicles like this would likely only sell in very small numbers, we suspect it’s more likely the vehicle will be either a high-performance sedan or a high-performance SUV that could rival the Porsche Taycan, Macan Electric, or the upcoming Cayenne Electric, which has already been confirmed to pack upwards of 1,000 hp.

Beyond confirming the new powerful EVs, Genesis revealed that its extended-range models will offer upwards of 1,000 km (621 miles) of combined driving range. It also said that its more traditional hybrids will top out at “500hp+” and designed to deliver fuel efficiency and EV-levels of power.
