Imagine Dropping $19M on the World’s Most Expensive New Car and Getting Bored Anyway

In early 2019, Bugatti unveiled what was at the time the most expensive new car ever made: the La Voiture Noire. Built as a one-off, it was sold for a staggering €16.7 million or $19 million at the time, sparking a frenzy of speculation about who had dropped that amount of cash for what amounts to a Chiron with some very special bodywork. Now, this hyper-exclusive car is heading to auction for the first time.

While the current owner of the car remains a mystery, it’s thought to have been purchased new by a Swiss couple, not Cristiano Ronaldo or the late Ferdinand Piech like rumors from 2019 had suggested. The La Voiture Noire has made several public appearances over the years, most notably participating in a Supercar Owners Circle road trip through Croatia in 2022.

The hypercar is being offered through a partnership between SBX Cars, the auction platform founded by influencer Alex Hirschi, better known as Supercar Blondie, and Broad Arrow Auctions. It will not appear at a traditional public auction, though. Instead, the sale is private, with potential buyers required to register with SBX before receiving an invitation to place a bid.

A Bugatti shrouded in mystery

No details have been provided about how many miles are on the car’s odometer, nor what kind of condition it is in, but given its value, we’d expect it to be absolutely pristine. In addition, no pre-auction estimate has been provided for the car, but obviously, the seller will be eager to sell it for a premium over the original record-breaking sticker price.

When designing the one-off, Bugatti took inspiration from the legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic. So, while the underpinnings of the La Voiture Noire are basic Chiron, it has bespoke, hand-crafted bodywork, as well as unique LED headlights and taillights. Powering the one-off is Bugatti’s legendary 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine, delivering 1,479 hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque.
