An unexpected loss of drive power is alarming and significantly increases the risk of an accident. Unfortunately, this is something that over a quarter of a million Honda owners could experience.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 256,603 Accord Hybrids from the 2023-2025 model years could lose drive power due to a software issue. An error can cause the integrated control module central processing unit to reset while driving.

That’s not good and Honda first became aware of the issue in March of 2024. The automaker spent months investigating and eventually determined that during the development of abnormality monitoring software for the integrated control module’s CPU, the “supplier did not fully understand the component specifications.”
Details are hazy, but the misunderstanding resulted in faulty software that identified internal communication errors as CPU abnormalities. “Furthermore, the addition of new ICM-controlled functions increased the electrical load and associated electrical noise, resulting in communication errors, false CPU abnormality detections, and unintended ICM resets.”
Only 0.3% of the recalled vehicles are believed to have the problem, but Honda has received 832 warranty claims related to the issue. That’s a surprisingly high number as 0.3% of 256,603 is only 770 vehicles, so the estimate seems slightly off. On the bright side, there haven’t been any reports of injuries or accidents.
To address the problem, customers will need to take their vehicle to the dealership, where technicians will reprogram the ICM CPU software. Owner notifications are scheduled to go out early next year.
