- Next-gen Toyota Hilux gets overhauled exterior with slimmer lights and blockier bumpers.
- Redesigned interior has a free-standing infotainment display and a digital instrument cluster.
- Toyota retains IMV ladder-frame platform with expected hybrid and diesel engine options.
After dominating sales charts for years, Toyota’s mid-size pickup is finally getting a major refresh. The current Hilux has been around for over a decade, and while it remains a top seller globally – despite not being offered in America – it’s starting to show its age.

Now, with the next-generation model on the horizon, recently leaked patent images reveal that a comprehensive overhaul is underway. Between the redesigned exterior and a thoroughly updated cabin, the Hilux looks ready to give the Ford Ranger a run for its money.

Earlier this year, a prototype was spotted testing under heavy camouflage, prompting a pair of artists to create renderings of what the new Hilux might look like. Now, newly leaked patent images, shared on Instagram by @cars_secrets, confirm, several of the upcoming design changes, including a completely redesigned front fascia with slimmer headlights and a revised bumper.
Like the current model, the ninth-gen Hilux will sport squared-off front and rear wheel arches. Other interesting features include a small step incorporated into the side of the rear bumper, making it easier to load things on the bed, and all-new taillights.
A Modern Cabin, Finally
Arguably the biggest change is inside. The outgoing Hilux cabin lags behind competitors, especially the Ford Ranger, in both layout and technology. That gap appears to be closing fast with the upcoming redesign.
Immediately standing out is a large, free-standing infotainment display in the center of the dashboard, probably measuring around 12 inches. This display appears noticeably smaller than the larger, tablet-like screens used by the current Tacoma and Tundra in the US. Positioned below the display are a pair of air vents.
We can also see the 2026 Hilux will sport a digital instrument cluster and an overall flatter and blockier design than the current pickup, which has a surprising amount of curves and creases throughout. An all-new transmission tunnel is also featured, complete with a new gear selector and console.

While the patent image doesn’t show the steering wheel, it’s safe to assume this will be a new design too, possibly sharing cues with the latest Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
Under the skin, the Hilux is expected to continue using an evolved version of Toyota’s IMV ladder-frame chassis. Engine options will vary by region, but among them will likely be an updated 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel paired with mild-hybrid tech, along with a selection of standard gasoline and diesel variants.
