A fraction-of-a-second lighting glitch has triggered a major recall, sending thousands of Frontiers back for a quick software fix

- Automatic stop-start glitch briefly dims DRLs, prompting recall for nearly 14,000 vehicles.
- Issue traced to software update made for 2025.5 Frontier’s Engine Control Module.
- Dealers will update Engine Control Module software free of charge for affected owners.
An automatic stop-start system is supposed to help conserve fuel, but in the 2025 Nissan Frontier, it’s created a small but notable issue with the LED daytime running lights. Because of this glitch, the truck doesn’t meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, prompting a recall across the United States for nearly 14,000 vehicles.

Nissan has revealed that every single time the Frontier’s Idle Stop-Start (ISS) system restarts the engine, the brightness of the DRLs briefly dips for about 0.3 seconds. It’s a subtle change and not considered a serious safety risk, but it technically violates federal lighting regulations.
The company doesn’t believe this temporary dimming would mislead other drivers or be mistaken for a turn signal, but the inconsistency is enough to warrant action.
Glitch Tied to Engine Software
The problem has been traced to a software update made to the Engine Control Module when launching the 2025.5 Frontier. A Nissan engineer first observed the issue during the routine evaluation of a vehicle on April 21, 2025.
In total, 13,719 vehicles are being recalled, and Nissan believes that every single one of them experiences the same DRL fault. The affected Frontiers were built between December 14, 2024, and June 17, 2025.

A Quick Software Fix
Dealerships were notified of the recall on August 8, and owners will be notified via first-class mail starting on September 17. The fix is straightforward, as dealers will update the Engine Control Module software at no cost to owners. The update should take less than an hour, though it may still be an inconvenience for some.
This is not the first time the current-generation Frontier has been recalled in the United States. In mid-2024, almost 6,000 had to be recalled as they may have been manufactured with an oversized front right-hand ball joint, which could impact drivability and increase the risk of a crash.
