BMW’s Neue Klasse Era Is Coming For The 7-Series Face

  • Refreshed BMW 7-Series gets smaller grilles, updated lights, and potential new tech.
  • The front-end design now includes horizontal slats and glossy black grille inserts.
  • Powertrain options remain similar with gas, hybrid, and full-electric i7 variants available.

Within the next few years, all BMW models will adopt the company’s Neue Klasse design language. Already previewed by a handful of concepts, and set to soon premiere on the second-generation iX3, the long-awaited new design era for the brand should make its vehicles much easier on the eye. The 7-Series is among the models being refreshed and this is our best chance to see it up close.

If you ask this writer, the 7-Series is perhaps the single ugliest car that BMW currently builds. The split headlights and gargantuan kidney grilles make it look a little like a knock-off. The upcoming mid-cycle facelift, however, seems to correct course, with a redesigned grille that’s been scaled back for a more balanced and cohesive look.

Despite the camouflage, we can see that the upper portion of the kidneys are now solid high-gloss black, with the panel on the right housing a small camera. Positioned beneath them are the grilles, now rocking horizontal ratherbslats rather than vertical slats.

The Other Updates

Most of BMW’s Neue Klasse models will be characterized by slim headlights that join seamlessly with the grilles. It’s hard to know if this will be the case with the 7-Series, but the camouflage appears to indicate the sedan will retain split headlights just like the car currently on sale. Whether this will look cohesive when combined with the new grille remains to be seen when Munich officially unveils its revamped executive sedan.

From the side, the facelifted sedan shows little change, and the overall rear silhouette looks familiar. Even so, fresh alloy wheel designs are expected, and the taillights have been revised with reshaped LED signatures that sharpen the car’s appearance.

Interior Possibilities

For what the current 7-Series lacks in exterior beauty, it makes up for it with a stunning interior. Updates will be made to the cabin of this new model. Though no cabin shots have surfaced, the sedan may adopt BMW’s new Panoramic Vision system, which replaces the current twin-screen setup with a full-width display. This feature is set to debut first on the production Vision Neue Klasse X SUV.

Rear passengers will retain their luxuries, including the available 31-inch, 8K fold-down cinema screen and individual  5.5-inch color touchscreen controls integrated int o passenger door handles.

Powertrain Continuity

Under the skin, changes are expected to be modest. The range will continue to span gasoline and plug-in hybrid options, alongside the fully electric i7. Minor refinements may be introduced, but the overall lineup will remain consistent with today’s offerings.
