Xpeng Is Turning Its EVs Into Long-Distance Hybrids With Nearly 1,000 Miles Of Range

  • Xpeng is retrofitting several EVs with range-extended hybrid powertrains.
  • The X9 EREV carries a massive 63.3 kWh battery and a 1.5-liter turbo engine.
  • Electric-only range is estimated at 280 miles on China’s CLTC test cycle.

Xpeng has made a name for itself in the Chinese market with its battery-electric vehicles, but even it has come to the realization that it cannot ignore the demand for hybrids. As such, it is working to adding range-extender hybrid powertrains to several of its popular models, and one of the first will be a re-engineered version of the X9, first unveiled a couple of years ago in EV guise.

At the heart of the new X9 EREV is Xpeng’s SEPA 3.0 platform, also known as Kunpeng AI. This architecture makes it possible to slot a range-extender system into an existing EV without starting from scratch. In the case of the X9 EREV, it will be fitted with a 63.3 kWh battery pack.

This will be one of the largest battery packs offered in any hybrid model, only trailing the optional 70 kWh battery available in Zeekr’s new plug-in hybrid 9X.

Range and performance numbers

Data filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows that the X9 EREV will have an all-electric driving range of 280 miles (450 km) under the CLTC cycle. Working alongside the battery pack will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine delivering 148 hp. All up, the X9 EREV should be capable of traveling up to 994 miles (1,600 km) without refueling or recharging.

That figure is especially impressive when you consider the X9 weighs in at a hefty 2,750 kg (6,062 lbs) and is 5,316 mm (209.2 inches) long, 1,988 mm (78.2 inches) wide, and stands 1,785 mm (70.2 inches) tall, making it slightly larger than the all-electric version.

It’s not yet clear how much power the electric motor of the minivan will deliver, meaning combined power and torque figures alongside the 1.5-liter also remain a mystery at this stage.

Tested far from the school run

Recent images released by Xpeng of the X9 EREV show it being put to the test in some of the country’s harshest conditions, including sandy deserts where most owners are unlikely to ever venture. Xpeng says the vehicle has been tested in 19 other countries and 330 cities around the world, ensuring that it’s ready for primetime.

Pricing and availability details will be announced close to the vehicle’s launch in the fourth quarter of the year.
