GWM Ora 5, the brand’s first electric SUV, to debut on September 25 in China

Great Wall Motor’s electric brand Ora has confirmed that its first SUV will be named the Ora 5. The new model will make its debut on September 25 during the “Natural Aesthetics Design Appreciation” event.

The name was chosen following a public poll initiated by Ora brand general manager Lü Wenbin on September 12. Options included Ora Cat, Ora 5, and Ora i5, with Ora 5 ultimately receiving the highest votes. Lü explained that the combination of the brand name and a number is simple, internationally recognisable, and forms the basis for a consistent naming sequence across future products.

According to information released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ora 5 follows the brand’s retro-inspired design language. Its front features oval-shaped headlights, a closed fascia, and a larger lower intake with side ducts for a sportier look. A panoramic glass roof comes as standard, while a solid roof is optional. Some versions will also offer roof rails and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. At the rear, the SUV adopts a wide, curved tailgate and rounded lines, with the choice of either a GWM badge or an Ora badge.

The Ora 5 is positioned above the Ora Good Cat, placing it within the compact SUV segment. It measures 4,471 millimetres in length, 1,833 to 1,844 millimetres in width, and 1,641 millimetres in height, with a 2,720-millimetre wheelbase. This makes it significantly larger than the Good Cat, which is 4,242 millimetres long with a 2,650-millimetre wheelbase.

Power will come from a 150-kilowatt electric motor developed by Hycet, a GWM subsidiary, paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by SVOLT, also known as Honeycomb Energy. While capacity details remain undisclosed, homologation documents confirm a top speed of 170 kilometres per hour. The filings also list optional equipment, including LiDAR, radar and camera systems, multiple roof colours, and various wheel designs.

In the domestic market, the Ora 5 is expected to compete with compact electric SUVs such as the BYD Yuan Plus, Geely Galaxy E5, and Leapmotor B10. Its arrival also signals a renewal of Ora’s lineup. Since its founding in 2018, the brand has focused exclusively on EVs, but niche models like the Ballet Cat and Lightning Cat saw limited success. Sales between January and August 2025 totalled 14,781 units  (China EV DataTacker data). With the Ora 5 as its first new product since 2022, Ora is aiming to re-establish itself in China’s growing EV sector.
