Smart ForFour Is Coming Back From The Dead As #4

  • The brand’s CEO said that the new #2 will be followed by a mechanically related #4.
  • The new EV will be a successor of the Smart ForFour that was discontinued in 2021.
  • The shared platform was jointly developed by Geely in China and Mercedes in Europe.

Smart has recently confirmed that a new generation of the ForTwo is under development and will debut in late 2026 with the #2 moniker. What came as a surprise, however, is that it will be later joined by a more practical four-door model, the #4, effectively reviving the spirit of the discontinued ForFour.

Smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann confirmed the news during the recent Munich Motor Show. Speaking to Autocar, he said that the new model “needs to look like a successor” to the old ForFour, which was essentially a stretched version of the ForTwo with an extra set of doors and four seats.

Naturally, the new #2 and #4 will share the same basic underpinnings. Unlike the members of the current Smart lineup that were engineered by Geely in China, the new platform was developed in collaboration with Mercedes in Europe. Adelmann said that this is “very important because this team makes sure that we have a European product that is ready for European customers”.

As he noted, the company decided to expand the lineup with an additional model as they “need the economies of scale”. Smart has been trying to make a new ForTwo since 2019 and since they couldn’t find a partner for joint development, they had to think of another solution.

“We always were trying to make it feasible, but it took us three years longer than expected…Better late than never”, Adelmann explained. He added that the difficult part was to make the platform small enough for the #2, as it is “much easier to expand slightly” for the #4.

While Smart’s boss didn’t reveal any specs, he hinted at a dual-motor setup and a small turning cycle for the urban EVs.

While the smart #2 will retain a unique positioning as the only two-seater EV in Europe’s A-Segment, the #4 will have to compete with direct rivals. These include the upcoming Renault Twingo and the production version of the VW ID.Every1 concept.

The Rest Of The Lineup

The #2 and #4 fill the numerical gaps in Smart’s range that currently comprises the #1, #3 and #5 models. The naming scheme is obviously not primarily based on size, with the even numbers reserved for regular cars and the odd numbers for SUVs. There are also reports about a possible Smart #6 sedan that would be consistent with this naming scheme.

Besides getting ready to unveil the new products, the company is working on updates for the #1 and #3 crossovers. In 2026, the EVs will received an important model year update including hardware changes, followed by a more extensive facelift in 2027. Note that the #1 debuted in 2022 as the first model of Smart’s new era, and the #3 coupe-SUV version arrived in 2023. The boxier #5 that was introduced in 2024 remains its largest offering yet.
