Sultan’s Former McLaren F1 With Rare Kit Could Shatter Records At Auction

  • Originally owned by the Sultan of Brunei, this 1994 McLaren F1 is extremely rare.
  • It was repainted in Ibis White and fitted with the coveted High Downforce Kit.
  • The car underwent a $500K rebuild including LM-spec interior and OZ Racing wheels.

A supercar with royal history is heading to auction this December, and it’s one that’s guaranteed to attract global attention. While several McLaren F1s have surfaced this year, this 1994 example stands out thanks to its origins in the Sultan of Brunei’s legendary collection. With estimates topping $21 million, it could become one of the priciest F1s ever sold at public auction.

McLaren built just 64 road-going examples of the F1 and this one is chassis number 014. It was originally painted in Titanium Yellow with a black leather and Alcantara interior. However, unlike several other F1s owned by the Sultan, this one didn’t remain in his collection for long. It was sold to a buyer in the UK and was later acquired by the former Director of McLaren Cars, David Clark.

From Royal Garage to Racing Royalty

An unnamed collector from New York then owned the F1 for roughly three years before moving to California. It subsequently traded hands in 2006 and was sent back to McLaren’s HQ to be overhauled. During this process, it was repainted in the current shade of Ibis White and fitted with the rare high downforce kit, which includes a large fixed rear wing, an F1 GTR-inspired front bumper, and front louvers just like the F1 LM. Only eight examples worldwide received this setup.

The upgrades didn’t stop there. The car gained an improved exhaust system, lightweight five-spoke OZ Racing wheels, and a full LM-spec interior conversion. The work tallied more than $500,000, cementing its place as one of the most extensively modified road-going F1s. Adding to its appeal, Lewis Hamilton left his signature on the car during the 2007 Formula One season. After spending much of the past decade in the United States, it is now in the hands of a Danish owner.

Ready for the Spotlight

With 13,711 miles (22,065 km) recorded, the car presents in superb condition and is offered alongside a Gordon Murray T.50 from the same collection. For collectors, this pairing is as close as it gets to a dream garage, and the upcoming sale will likely prove just how much a piece of F1 history can command.
