The Best-Value Honda CR-V Isn’t Sold in America

  • Dongfeng Honda has introduced the CR-V Global 30th Anniversary Edition in China.
  • The SUV is available in gasoline and hybrid (e:HEV) versions with a generous kit.
  • Key features include a 12.3-inch infotainment, plus heated and ventilated seats.

Honda is celebrating the 30th anniversary since the global launch of the CR-V with a new special edition in China. The SUV is available with gasoline and hybrid powertrain options, offering more equipment for a lower price.

The Chinese-spec CR-V is a product of the Dongfeng Honda joint venture, with GAC Honda offering the mechanically-related Breeze. From the outside, the Global 30th Anniversary Edition looks just like the regular CR-V, with LED lights, an active grille, and body-colored cladding for the hybrid variant. Depending on the trim, it rides on alloy wheels measuring 17, 18, or 19 inches in diameter.

What is interesting is the features inside the cabin. First, the 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and the 12.3-inch infotainment are fitted as standard in all trims, as with the electric panoramic sunroof. Note that the US-spec CR-V is limited to a much smaller 9-inch display, while lower-spec models come with a 7-inch instrument cluster.

Another difference with its American counterpart is that the Chinese model offers heated and ventilated front seats, alongside heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Furthermore, is available with five-seater and seven-seater configurations. The range-topping trim of the 30th anniversary special gets an electric tailgate, a 50W wireless charger, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, a head up display, and the Honda Sensing 360+ safety suite.

Predictably, there are no surprises under the hood. The gasoline version of the SUV is is powered by a familiar turbocharged 1.5-liter engine producing 190 hp (142 kW / 193 PS) and 243 Nm (179 lb-ft) of torque. The mill is mated to a CVT gearbox sending power to either the front or to all four wheels.

The other option is the electrified CR-V e:HEV, generating a combined 181 hp (135 kW / 185 PS) and 335 Nm (247 lb-ft) of torque from a 2.0-liter engine and dual electric motors. The self-charging hybrid setup is also available in FWD and AWD guices.

And that leads us to pricing which is the biggest surprise. In China, the Dongfeng Honda CR-V Global 30th Anniversary Edition ranges between ¥145,900-191,900 ($20,500-27,000) for the ICE-powered version, and between ¥159,900-209,900 ($22,500-29,500) for the e:HEV. This makes it significantly cheaper compared to the US-spec CR-V which starts from $30,920 and tops out at $42,250 while missing out on some of the fancy features of its Chinese twin.
