BMW Might Finally Redeem The 2-Series With A Neue Klasse Facelift

The BMW 2-Series manages a rare feat in modern design: it’s a car that looks like it lost an argument with itself. Coupes are supposed to be the pretty ones, yet somehow this thing rolls up looking like it dressed in the dark. Among today’s crop of questionable styling choices, that’s quite an accomplishment.

Thankfully, BMW is on the verge of a broader design renaissance. The company has promised that its Neue Klasse design language that debuted on the iX3 will reshape the entire lineup over the next few years, meaning that the 2-Series could soon benefit from a facelift.

Back to the Drawing Board

If you ask me, the worst angle of car is the rear. Whereas the original was well proportioned, I’ve always felt that the taillights of the current model are positioned too far down and have an odd shape. To make the rear of the 2-Series look a little better, designer Theottle has imagined how it could look with the same lights as the all-new iX3.

These units are slimmer and wider than those on the model that’s currently on sale and also look far less bug-eyed. Complementing the new taillights is a heavily customized rear bumper and a new diffuser, both of which add to the improved looks.

Then there’s the front end. As standard, the headlights, daytime running lights, and triangular-shaped air intakes have always looked a little odd. In overhauling the Bimmer’s face, Theottle has lifted the sharp new headlights and kidney grilles from the iX3. Surprisingly, they too suit the overall shape of the 2-Series quite well.

When Could a Facelift Happen?

Several of Munich’s upcoming Neue Klasse-based models have already been spotted testing, including the electric M3 and the refreshed 7-Series. Prototypes of a revamped 2-Series, however, haven’t been seen yet, leaving its timeline uncertain.

As such, it’s difficult to know when it could hit the market, but if it does get the green light, we expect to see it launch sometime in the next couple of years.
