  • Crash in Italy kills 19-year-old and leaves three others injured.
  • Unlicensed 20-year-old suspected of driving the G-Class.
  • Opel Corsa driver tested positive during initial drug screening.

Tragedy struck in Milan, Italy, early Sunday morning when a crash reportedly led to the death of one person and injured three others. According to local reports, it involved an Opel Corsa and what appears to be a rental Mercedes G-Class, possibly an AMG based on some accounts, although the wreckage makes it difficult to confirm.

The force of impact was so intense that it tore the chassis of the boxy SUV away from the rest of the vehicle. Authorities are still working to understand how it all unfolded.

The Crash Scene

Italian outlets report that four people were inside the rented G-Class: a 30-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, a 20-year-old man who was allegedly behind the wheel without a license, and a 19-year-old man who later died from his injuries

The Opel had just one occupant, the driver, a 32-year-old man who evidently tested positive for drugs during an initial screening.

Initial confusion at the scene led responders to believe the teenager had been driving, but police later identified the unlicensed 20-year-old as the actual driver, after he allegedly tried to mislead them by posing as a bystander who had arrived to help.

According to Corriere della Sera, surveillance footage quickly exposed the ruse. Investigators noticed the man’s bloodstained clothing and a missing shoe, found inside the wrecked SUV. Combined with CCTV footage, these details directly linked him to the driver’s seat.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {

} else {
adpushup.triggerAd(“9b1169d9-7a89-4971-a77f-1397f7588751”);
}
});

Video from the scene shows just an immense amount of damage to the G-Class. The ladder-frame chassis lies on one side of the road while the front clip is gone from the body. The spare tire cover and another wheel sit across the road. It looks more like an explosion went off than a car wreck. The Opel suffered front-end damage but not much else.

Tall and Heavy

At this point, police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. Speed seems to be a potential contributing factor. In Italy, the Mercedes G-Class starts at over $180,000 but can easily edge past $300,000 once you move into AMG territory and start adding options.

It’s a heavy, and depending on the trim, extremely powerful SUV. That kind of weight and power rarely make an ideal combination, especially when paired with a tall, roll-prone stance. Sadly, it seems the people involved in this crash may have learned that the hardest possible way.
