Wey, a premium brand under Great Wall Motor, has officially launched the right-hand drive version of its Gaoshan MPV in the Thai market. Named the Wey G9 Hi4 for local consumers, the luxury plug-in hybrid vehicle is priced at 2.349 million Thai Baht, which converts to approximately 73,000 USD. This move marks Wey’s expansion into the Southeast Asian market.
For comparison, the Wey Gaoshan family in the Chinese domestic market is priced between 285,800 and 353,800 yuan (40,000 and 49,500 USD).
The Wey G9 Hi4 measures 5050mm in length, 1985mm in width, and 1900mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3085mm. These specifications are closely aligned with the domestic Gaoshan 7 model (5050mm length, 1960mm width, 1900mm height, 3085mm wheelbase), with the G9 Hi4 being slightly wider.
Inside, the WEY G9 Hi4 is equipped with a suite of features. Highlights include LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, a prominent 14.6-inch central control screen, a Head-Up Display (HUD), second-row zero-gravity seats, an integrated car refrigerator, and a 17.3-inch rear entertainment screen.
Under the hood, the Wey G9 Hi4 features a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. This powertrain combines a 1.5T engine with dual electric motors, delivering a combined maximum power output of 442 horsepower and a peak torque of 642 N·m. The system is paired with a 44.28 kWh battery, providing an NEDC pure electric range of 170 km.
On February 17, 2020, Great Wall Motor announced a significant step in its global expansion strategy: the acquisition of General Motors’ manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand.
Subsequently, Great Wall Motor invested approximately 5 billion yuan (700 million USD) to renovate the Rayong plant, which officially commenced production in June 2021. The first model to roll off the line was the Haval H6 HEV.
Notably, prior to the local market launch of its first model, Great Wall Motor introduced the GWM brand in February 2021, making it the first Chinese automotive brand to establish a wholly-owned presence in the Thai automotive market.
